THE CALL OF THE WILD by Jack London

This book is REQUIRED READING for any young man or woman looking to enter a life of action, especially on in the fire service or police department or the military. I can't tell you how influential this book has been for me.

Jack London was a man's man, and a writer's writer. He wrote about the active life he lived. His time spend panning for gold in the Yukon, he turned into literary gold with THE CALL OF THE WILD and several other of his Yukon stories.

This short novel follows Buck, a strapping young dog who is kidnapped and sold north into service as a sled-dog during the Alaskan Gold Rush. Having grown up the pampered pet of a rich man, Buck must learn to survive in a harsh climate, and even harsher new half-wild conditions amongst his fellow sled-dogs, who have little use for newbies like Buck.

Buck must learn "the Law of Club and Fang" if he expects to survive, and to master himself and become a leader in his new environment.
