Why, you ask, would I as a firefighter carry a handcuff key? In 23 years, I've been called to 3 emergencies where a handcuff key was needed and law enforcement was not on-scene, or the law enforcement that was on-scene (strangely) didn't have a handcuff key.

The first was a suicide attempt via firearm where the patient had shot himself after handcuffing himself to the handicap rail of a public restroom stall.

The second was during a DEA raid where a suspect was handcuffed to a large piece of furniture and the agent's handcuff key broke off in the cuffs. We had to perform surgery to get it out, but none of the other agents had another cuff key.

The third, to be blunt, was a FIFTY SHADES OF GREY sex scene gone bad. Less said about that one, the better.

Long story short, starting at a young age, I added a handcuff key to my complement of tools. You may not use it very often....but they add almost no weight or mass to your bunkers or gear bag.
