Mounting an axe or maul head onto a hickory handle is very easy:
First, remove the tool head from the old handle (if necessary). Next place the head onto the new axe or maul handle and secure tightly in a bench vise. Place the wooden mounting wedge into the slot on the new handle and drive it down into place with a deadblow hammer or hard mallet. Cut off any excess that can't be driven down using a hand saw or sawzall. Lastly, drive one or two metal wedges into the wood wedge/handle area to take up any remaining looseness.
